The 2020 Green Homes Grant

Homeowners in Telford and surrounding areas will soon be able to apply for a government grant to help meet the cost of installing double glazing in their homes if they are also installing energy saving measures such as home insulation or heat pumps.

The UK Government is about to launch a new scheme to help homeowners make energy efficient home improvements. The grants represent a significant investment in tackling the country’s energy use, with £2 billion put in to the fund.

Homeowners will be able to apply for a grant of up to £5,000 in vouchers towards the cost of installing any of the following energy efficient improvements:

·         Insulation (solid wall; cavity wall; under floor; loft; flat roof; room in roof; park home)

·         Air source heat pump

·         Ground source heat pump

·         Solar thermal

Vouchers should cover at least two thirds of the cost of eligible home improvements up to the £5,000 limit.

Upon installation of one of these measures you will then be able to access vouchers for secondary energy saving measures up to £5,000 including:

·         Double glazing

·         Energy efficient doors

·         Hot water tank thermostat or appliance thermostat

·         Hot water tank insulation

·         Smart heating controls, zone controls, thermostatic radiator valves

·         Draught proofing

As with any grant there are a number of strict conditions that must be followed. In the case of double glazing, the grant is only available if you currently have single glazing, and energy efficient doors are only eligible if they are replacing doors fitted before 2002.

The government estimates that the grants will benefit over 600,000 homeowners and will support over 100,000 jobs as businesses sign up to become TrustMark accredited. This means that they will be able to install the energy-efficient home improvements in the Green Homes Grant Scheme.

Households with the lowest incomes may not need to pay anything towards home improvements under the Green Homes Grant Scheme however they will need to prove that they receive certain benefits when they apply for the grant.
